Days 4 to 6 (Mile 47.5 to 101.5)

In the past few days after leaving Laguna Campground, we made it through 54 miles of desert including a 25+ mile dry stretch.

We’ve been carrying up to 12 liters of water in some sections. (I carry 5, Rob carries 7. He claims that this is equitable based on body weight, but I still feel a little bit bad about carrying less.)

Halfway through Day 5, we stumbled on to trail magic at Scissors Crossing (mile 77, where the trail crosses Highway 78)! We were both exhausted when we got there, but we planned to hike another 5 miles into the San Felipe Hills (Anza Borrego). Chairs were set up in the shade under the highway bridge. There was an ice chest full of sodas, beer, sweet peppers and grapes! This was the best!

After leaving Scissors Crossing with newfound energy, we were excited to see that many of the cacti were blooming! It was like walking through a botanical garden.

On Day 6 we passed the 100 mile mark and camped a few miles past it at Barrel Spring. There were at least a dozen other hikers there including Singer (now called Jukebox), Youngblood and many who don’t have trail names yet. Everyone sat around a fire until hiker midnight (8:00 pm).

    1. Not yet! But we just met a girl named Rabbit. She got her name after being attacked by a jack rabbit in the middle of the night. I don’t mind waiting…

  1. Congrats on your first 100 miles!! I’m so glad you guys have encountered so many trail angels. 👼

  2. Congrats on the first 100. Keep it up. Looking forward to meeting you in South Lake Tahoe or somewhere in the Mt Shasta area depending on how our schedules work out. Hopefully, I’ll be able to help you out.
